Plant Details

This is an unusual and rarely offered herbaceous species of Elder which is stunning when in flower and then later when it fruits. The flowers and fruits are very similar to the elder tree, but this is a spreading, herbaceous perennial.

Growing up to 3' with straight stems with green, elder-like leaves topped with many large white flowers in June, July and August, followed by clusters of purple elderberries.

This species is rarely offered in nurseries, which is a shame because this is a truly magnificent plant. Can be allowed to spread to cover a large area for a big impact.

This is a herb and medicinal uses include as a diuretic and to reduce fluid retention.

An easy plant to grow which is happy in most soil types.

Height and Spread: 90cm x 1.5m

Common name(s): Danewort, danesblood, dwarf elder or European dwarf elder, walewort, dwarf elderberry, elderwort and blood hilder.

All our plants are supplied in 9x10cm pots unless otherwise specified. Plants in this size pot establish quickly in the garden and often outpace plants in bigger pots planted at the same time. We do not sell 'plug plants' because those need to be grown on before planting. Our potted plants can be planted immediately, unless otherwise noted, or you can leave them in their pots until you are ready to plant. We grow everything we sell ourselves, in our nursery in the Buckinghamshire countryside.
