Iris: Named after the goddess of the rainbow, probably because of the variety of brilliant flower colours. Irises were traditionally a symbol of power and much used in heraldry, being the symbol of the kings of France. They had a variety of medicinal uses, and Iris root was important in perfumery. Irises grow in a variety of habitats, some in baking hot sun and others in water.
