Plant Details

Now very rare, this geum was introduced by Bernwode Plants in 1990. A superb selection with nodding flowers of gold from April to August and often into autumn.

Requires a sunny and moist, but well drained position.

Height: 25cm

Geums have long been cultivated, Our native wood avens, Geum urbanum, being a stalwart of medieval herbalists.

The name of the Genus  'Geum' derives from the Greek 'geno' = to yield a pleasant odour or alternatively from the Greek 'geyo' = to stimulate. This refers to the pleasant clove-like aroma that comes from the freshly dug up roots of wood avens. As a result of this, roots were used to flavour Ausburg Ale and to make cordials against the plague.

Common name(s): Avens

All our plants are supplied in at least 9x10cm pots. Plants in this size pot establish quickly in the garden and often outpace plants planted in bigger pots at the same time. We do not sell 'plug plants' because those need to be grown on before planting. Our potted plants can be planted immediately, unless otherwise noted, or you can leave them in their pots until you are ready to plant. We grow everything we sell ourselves, in our nursery in the Buckinghamshire countryside.
