Not to be confused with the tufted Viola "Columbine," which is not an odorata violet. "Colombine" is considered a cross between "Czar" and forms of "Quatre Saisons," sky blue with a pronounced white centre. Flowering time: Late winter to early spring.
Produced by French violet enthusiast Nathalie Casbas in 1991.
Grows well in semi-shade or Full Shade with free draining, fertile soil.
Sweet violets have been grown for over 2000 years and were the symbol of ancient Athens. Violets were used in cookery in mediaeval times and strewn in rooms to disguise unpleasant smells. Essential oil is extracted from the flowers and is still used today in the perfume industry.
