One of our passions is to preserve wonderful plants which, for various reasons, have slipped into obscurity and are no longer commercially available. In many cases, these plants have stood the test of time in British gardens for generations and are ideally adapted and suited to our climate and environment. Some have a very interesting history and stories to them too.
We are lucky enough to have some wonderful customers who share our passion and we are frequently sent bits of named plants which they have in their gardens, but which cannot be bought in nurseries anymore.
Chrysanthemum 'Elspeth' is one such plant, which has recently arrived. It is thought to have been bred at Capel Manor and known to have been grown since at least 1911. Now though, under the Plant Heritage 'Threatened Plants Project' criteria, this hardy chrysanthemum is now classified as ‘Threatened in cultivation’.
Our customer reports that this Chrysanthemum is very tough and grows very strongly, so it seems to be a very garden-worthy plant. We are pleased to be able to add it to our range in order to keep it available for gardeners to enjoy for some time to come. Plants will be available in about 6 weeks.
