Plant Overview

Bright green, leafy perennial, fully hardy and evergreen in mild areas. Will grow to about 3-4ft tall and across. Huge spires of two-tone hooded flowers rise above spiky glossy green foliage from July to September.

Easy plant to grow. Acanthus will grow in sun or shade. This acanthus is a vigorous perennial that has a striking architectural presence - and the flowers can be used in both fresh and dried arrangements. The leaves were the source of the Corinthian leaf motif developed and used as a decoration in ancient Greek and Roman art and architecture.

Introduced to the UK from Southern Europe in 1629.

Tolerant of drought and shade.

Height: 1.2m

Common names:  Bear's breeches.

All our plants are supplied in 9x10cm pots unless otherwise specified. Plants in this size pot establish quickly in the garden and often outpace plants in bigger pots planted at the same time. Our potted plants can be planted immediately, unless otherwise noted, or you can leave them in their pots until you are ready to plant. We grow almost everything we sell ourselves, in our nursery in the Buckinghamshire countryside. Our prices include VAT at 20%.
