Kitaibelia vitifolia (Russian hibiscus)

This wonderful plant is not often offered in the UK. It can be difficult to find a tall, flowering perennial that grows in shade and has impressive flowers but this does just that.

Related to hollyhocks, it can grow up to 8ft high with unusual, vine-like leaves and large, showy, cup-shaped, white or pale rose-pink flowers from July until the first frosts. Despite its height, it doesn't take over and is happy to sit at the back of a mixed border.

Fully hardy, it will give years of pleasure, brightening up a shady spot. Alternatively, it's perfectly happy in full sun or partial shade, so it's very versatile.
